Still Life With Fruits and Stringed Instrument by Georges Braque

In the galleries of the Art Institute of Chicago hangs one of George Braque's masterpieces the "Still Life with Fruits and Stringed Instrument". This revolutionary Cubist piece explores new horizons for us to understand.

This work of art is teaming with activity and offers the viewer almost too much to grasp. In the center of the table you have a large fruit bowl on a stand holding an assortment of fruits. The grapes are clearly rendered in the middle while the pear is to the left edge of the fruit bowl. To the lower left of the fruit stand is the guitar or lute face up on the table. In front of the viewer on the table closest to the picture plane is a plate with a lemon and fruit. The plate is resting on a scroll of papers that looks like music. Looking to the right you see an uncut lemon resting on papers that have parallel lines inscribed on them representing a musical score. The same is the case with the decanter of wine just above the lemon and also with the orange and glass of wine to the far right.

On the back side of the table both the left and right sides are two images. The one on the left is a red figure with a kidney bean shape that I perceive to be the musician. Complimenting this figure on the right back side of the table is a triangular figure in yellow with zig-zags and dots on it. I perceive this to be a female companion enjoying the food and music of her friend.

Still Life With Fruits and Stringed Instrument by Georges Braque

The back wall of the scene is complex and busy, you can see the base-board of the wall and floor running along the bottom of the figure in red and then continue on from the other side of the table to the right of the triangular figure then off the canvas. There is no attention paid to keeping the horizon line of the floor in alignment with each side, the point is to secure the back plane for the table.

Throughout the painting you have zig-zag patterns that permeate the entire fabric of the work and give great visual stimulation to the piece. All of the zig-zag patterns are compartmentalized as you can see from the three panels on the back wall, the triangle figure to the right and the bowl of fruit impaled by dorsal fin like patterns. This is a wonderful stimulating work and is a landmark in bringing Cubist elements to the fore.

Wine Serving Steps For Restaurant Servers

Why Learn To Serve Wine Properly?

If you have ever bought a bottle of wine in a nice restaurant, you may have noticed that the server does not just pop the cork and pour you a glass, but instead goes through a specific process of opening the bottle, letting the buyer test the wine, then pouring in a specific manner.

This presentation may seem unnecessary, but like many formalities it is based on tradition, and serving wine in the proper manner shows that the restaurant knows what they are doing. Most restaurants want to give their guests the impression that they are very important customers, especially when they are going to pay top dollar for a bottle of wine!

Wine Serving Steps For Restaurant Servers

This formal wine presentation adds to the atmosphere of exclusivity of the restaurant, and makes the guest feel important. When you are serving the wine, it shows that you are professional and know your business well.

7 Steps to Serving Wine in a Restaurant

Step 1: Set up wine glasses ahead of time. Make sure there is a glass for everyone who will be drinking wine. Make sure you have the proper glasses for the wine (red, white, or sparkling wines require different glasses). If you are not sure about the glass, go to my website and see my wine glass types page for a guide on which glass should be used with which wine (this is important!).

Step 2: Bring the wine up to the table. Present it to the person who ordered it with the label facing them. Announce the wine to them. For example, say "the 2003 Chateau Latour Pauillac, sir". This is just so the person can verify that you brought them the correct bottle.

Step 3: Hold the bottle in one hand and use your wine key to remove the cork. Try to take out the cork without it making a pop. If it is champagne or sparkling wine, definitely do not pop the cork and shoot it across the room (even though it is fun)!

Step 4: Present the cork to the person who ordered the wine. Some people want to inspect it or sniff it to make sure it has not dried out.

Step 5: Pour a small amount into the glass of the head of the table (the person that ordered the bottle). Let him or her test it out to make sure it is OK.

Step 6: Fill up the glasses of the other guests, ladies first, in a clockwise order. Fill the host's glass last. Only fill the glasses about half full.

Step 7: If there is any wine left in the bottle, leave it on the edge of the table (if it is a red wine) or in a chiller (if it is a white wine). The guests will then refill their own glasses as necessary.

These are the basic 7 steps for serving wine for a server or sommelier. There are other things to consider, including the serving temperature of the wine and whether or not you should aerate it or use a decanter. For more information on these subjects, go to my website.

Types of Glass

We are surrounded by lots of types of glasses everywhere. Here I want to give you some information about the glass and their different types.

Float Glass is a term for perfectly flat, clear glass. The production method, introduced in the UK by Sir Alastair, Pilkington in the late 1950's is still being used today and 90% of flat glass is manufactured using this process.

Body-tinted is a normal float-clear glass into whose melt colorants are added for tinting and solar-radiation absorption properties. This reduces heat penetration in buildings. Coloured glass is an important architectural element for the exterior appearance of shades. It is also used in interior decoration (doors, partitions, staircase panels, mirrors).

Types of Glass

Reflective Glass is an ordinary float glass with a metallic coating to reduce solar heat. This special coating also produces a mirror effect, preventing subject from seeing through the glass. It is mainly used in facades.

Low-E Glass is a low-emission clear glass with a microscopically thin coating of metal oxide. This allows the sun's heat and light to pass through into the building, but at the same time blocks heat from leaving the room, thereby reducing heat loss considerably.

Mirrors are commonly made of glass with a smooth, polished surface.

Insulating Glass is a multi-glass combination consisting of two or more glass panes. Its' most important function is to reduce thermal losses, transparency by reducing incidence of condensation on the warm air side, and the possibility of using larger glazed areas without increasing energy consumption.

Enamelled/Screen Printed is a decorative glass, is tempered or heat-strengthened, one face of which is covered, either partially or totally, with mineral pigments. It is also a solar ray controller, and is used for glazing and for cladding in facades and roofs. It can be assembled into laminated glass or gazed insulation.

Patterned is an imperfectly smooth structure with different patterns impressed on it. The depth, size and shape of the patterns determine the magnitude and direction of reflection. Patterned glass usually transmits only slightly less light than clear glass. It can be used for interior design and decorations, furniture, windows etc.

Photovoltaic is a special glass with integrated solar cells, to convert solar energy into electricity. This means that the power for an entire building can be produced within the roof.

Electro-chromic is an energy-saving component for building that can change colour on command. It works by passing low-voltage electrical charges across a very thin coating on the glass surface, activating an electro-chromic layer which changes colour from clear to dark.

Liquid crystal glazing is laminated glass with a minimum of two clear or coloured sheets of glass and a liquid crystal film, assembled between at least two plastic layers. In the off state, the liquid crystals are not aligned, which prevent vision, yet allows light to pass through the glass. When it is switched on, the liquid crystals align, turning the glass transparent and allowing vision through the glass. The change of transparency takes place within milliseconds. Liquid crystal glazing is designed for internal applications, including partitions, display cases, bank screens etc.

Self-cleaning is an ordinary float glass with a special photo-catalytic coating. It is made by chemically bonding and integrating a microscopically thin surface layer to the exterior surface of clear glass. This type of glass also has Hydrophilic-properties, meaning that rain flows down as a sheet, washing away the dirt instead of leaving it behind as with normal glass.

Tempered (Toughened) is two or more times stronger than annealed glass. When broken, it is shatters into many small fragments, which prevent major injuries.

Fire-resistant Glass can be classified in two categories, (1) heat transmitting glass that contains flames and inflammable gas for short period of time, but does not prevent the transmission of heat to the other side of glazing, e.g. wired glass, reinforced laminated glass. (2) Fire-insulating glass contains the flames and inflammable gas for longer period and prevents not only the transmission of flames and smoke but also of heat to the other side.

Drink Wine Every Day - 5 Benefits to Consuming Red Wine Daily

Many people are constantly wondering if it's safe to drink wine every day. There are controversial infos coming from doctors and those in the known, however the general consensus is that yes, drinking a glass of wine very day is quite safe and even helpful to your health.

There are several benefits to consuming wine - particularly red wine - with your meal and here are the top 5 benefits that have been so far discovered.

  1. There are several studies that have shown that drinking red wine actually helps with losing weight. When drunk in moderation, it helps with keeping the waistline thin because it is known that alcohol helps the body to burn the calories faster. Actually when you have one drink (only in moderation please!) your body can burn up to 90 calories. If you drink too much though, you will have other problems to deal with, more serious ones that having a bit of extra weight, so keep this in mind.
  2. A glass of wine a day helps with better memory retention. There have been several researches done which show clearly that a bit of wine on a daily basis helps with remembering things much better than for those people who don't consume wine at all, or those that are alcoholics. Once again, moderation is the key here.
  3. Wine helps slow down aging. Resveratrol is in part responsible for this, so if you want to help your body keep its elasticity for longer, go for wines that have a higher resveratrol content, such as the well known Pinot Noir, for example.
  4. Wine seems to also have anti cancer properties, particularly when consuming the red sort. It has various biological elements that can help with this. Of course, this doesn't mean that if you drink a glass of wine everyday you will never have cancer, however the chances of not having it is increased with people who consume it in moderation.
  5. Red wine seems to raise the levels of LDL, which is the good cholesterol, in the body. This has the effect of helping unclog your arteries.

Drink Wine Every Day - 5 Benefits to Consuming Red Wine Daily

These tips do come with a disclaimer: wine, just as any other alcohol, should be consumed in moderation. Never drink more than 1-2 glasses a day. Drinking more wine that the recommended quantity doesn't mean that you will get more health benefits than when consuming only a little every day. Don't go overboard and you will soon start to see the major benefits of drinking wine every day.

Wine Aerator - The Ultimate Wine Accessory

Imagine this scenario: You have a dinner party this evening. All the food is wonderfully prepared, the table is set beautifully, and the wine has been set to breathe. Wait! You forgot to let the wine breathe! As your guests begin to arrive, what will you do? The answer is a wine aerator.

What Exactly is a Wine Aerator?

This ingenious device allows your best red or white to breathe simply by pouring it through! There's no need to wait hours any longer for the perfect glass. It allows air to mix with the vino, which does a number of different things. First, it helps bring out the best bouquet, taste, and character. Some younger varieties also need the acidity reduced for a smoother finish, while older bottles may contain some sediment. Sediment results in a less pleasant experience, as can small pieces of cork. A good wine aerator will remove all of that.

Wine Aerator - The Ultimate Wine Accessory

Two Distinct Types

There are basically two types of this accessory. The first is held above the glass or decanter and you pour the liquid through it. Unfortunately, it's a not a very successful means of aeration. In order to get the most benefit from aeration, the wine aerator should sit on top of the glass. This allows the wine to flow down through the aerator and cascade down the curve or "sweet spot" of the glass. When you're looking for the best aerator available, you should find one that sits on top of the glass or decanter in order to get the best results.

Playing with Colors

You obviously go to a great deal of trouble to ensure that your table looks beautiful, as well as the other settings in your home. There are some of these wine accessories that are very beautiful and some are available in a wide range of colors. You can choose the color that best matches the surroundings in your home. However, also think about the different holidays that are coming up. You may want a couple of different colors, just for these special occasions.

A Final Thought or Two

Why waste hours with the decanting process? The right wine aerator is the perfect solution to your entertaining needs or even when you are just going to enjoy a glass by yourself. You'll love the way the glass finishes and you're certain to use one each time you open a bottle.

Wine Aerator - The Ultimate Wine Accessory

Finally! The very best wine is only moments away! Wine aerators simplify the decanting process and provide immediate results. The WineWeaver is specifically designed as "one complete breathing process" and you should taste what a difference it makes for almost any bottle of red or white. Check out how the WineWeaver works to see this fantastic product in action!

How to Pay Bills With Your Waterford Crystal

Sometimes Luxury Items Like Waterford Crystal Can Pay Your Bills

As we all know, Waterford Crystal is a luxury item. Beautiful to hold with all the sparkling colors from the rays of sunlight through an open window, but sometimes those big sparkly things must come in second place to feed your family! And rightly so.

When bills are pending and the mortgage payment or rent is due, what good is that Waterford Ship's Decanter, A Big Chandelier hanging in your hallway, or drinking vino from your Lismore Wine Goblets, when you need basic living? The following are some things you might want to consider in this current economic climate..

How to Pay Bills With Your Waterford Crystal

Should Waterford Crystal Take Pride Of Place In Your Home, When You're Hurting Financially? Absolutely Not!

AND

Do I Really Need My Waterford Crystal, When The Bills Are Piling Up?

Recently I received an email from a little old lady who lost her job through cutbacks in the Health Dept. Her husband had died the previous year, he had no life insurance. She told me that she lost most of her savings in the 401K Plan and had decided to sell off some of her Waterford collection, including a beautiful Chandelier in order to make ends meet and could I appraise it for her.

This is a typical situation and should make people ponder on their priorities. Food with basic needs on the table, or Waterford Crystal Flutes to drink champagne?

Various Ways To Sell Your Waterford Crystal - Why I Don't Recommend Pawn Shops

There are various ways to sell your crystal. If you have a good collection you may want to set up a page on eBay, under the "Collectibles" category. I know some people that have had a very good response in selling this way. The fees are reasonable and you don't have to sell if your reserve price is not met. In other words if you don't get your asking price you don't need to sell. There are lots of tutorials on how to set up an account on eBay, just Google it for more info.

Collectors Magazines are another good source of selling your luxury items. There are lots of collectors out there that are missing that "one piece" that you may have, to complete their set and make them as happy a leprechaun with his stash of gold.

Another way are local Newspapers. Put a small add in there with a brief explanation of what you have for sale and wait for that phone to ring. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Estate Sales are another good source. What you need to do is contact an Estate Agent to set up a day or weekend sale. You put the tag on your crystal pieces and negotiate a commission cut for the agent

Try to avoid Pawn Shops to sell your Waterford as they will only give you 10% of the value and the odds of you redeeming will not be favorable, due to your financial circumstances. That's why I don't recommend pawn shops

Waterford Crystal Appraisals. Find Out Your Waterford Crystal's True Value, Before You Sell

It is very important to to have your crystal appraised by an expert to get its full value and give you a running chance at your asking price. James Connolly will perform research by way of Digital Photographs and will give you a honest report in PDF format as to what you can expect to get for your Waterford Crystal. This report will help you with potential buyers, to get what its really worth!.

How To Make Rose Wine At Home

More and more wine makers want to try making rose wine, and this seems to become quite popular nowadays. Earlier on, this type was hardly looked upon as something that great and people would only drink it during summer. The really important wines used to be the white and red wines. However now rose is rising in popularity with many people.

You can find these days many different types of Rose wines on the market, and especially well liked is the dry rose. You might also know it under the name of blush wine. It is a pinkish type of wine which in Europe is more dry and in the US is more sweet.

If you've never made wine before, avoid starting with a Rose. Go instead with red or white as it's much easier. However if you are already a seasoned wine maker, experimenting with a rose might give you some interesting and well liked results.

How To Make Rose Wine At Home

You can make a Rose in three different ways: as a blanc de noir, as a saignee or by mixing red with white wine.

The actual color of your wine will be greatly dependent on how long you want to leave the grapes skin in contact with the juice. To obtain the rose colored wine, the contact needs to be rather short, between 2-3 days. This is when the grapes are pressed and the skin is discarded. The longer you actually leave the two in contact, the darker your wine will become. Also the type of grapes used will be another deciding factor in the color of the final result. Grapes with a deep color will yield in a very rich pink colored wine.

Bleeding, also called saignee, is a method in making rose wine and this is mostly used when you actually want to have more tannin and color in a red wine while at the same time you remove the juice. You have to remove the juice quite early for best results. The juice will be fermented separately and the rose will be something like a bi-product of your created red wine.

The blending process is done when you want to mix red and white grapes to obtain a pink color wine. This is not so popular nowadays though and blending these days is used for enhancing the quality, taste and aroma of the wine instead of actually creating pink or rose wine. In France, in the region of Champagne, people still use this particular process, however.
