Still Life With Fruits and Stringed Instrument by Georges Braque

In the galleries of the Art Institute of Chicago hangs one of George Braque's masterpieces the "Still Life with Fruits and Stringed Instrument". This revolutionary Cubist piece explores new horizons for us to understand.

This work of art is teaming with activity and offers the viewer almost too much to grasp. In the center of the table you have a large fruit bowl on a stand holding an assortment of fruits. The grapes are clearly rendered in the middle while the pear is to the left edge of the fruit bowl. To the lower left of the fruit stand is the guitar or lute face up on the table. In front of the viewer on the table closest to the picture plane is a plate with a lemon and fruit. The plate is resting on a scroll of papers that looks like music. Looking to the right you see an uncut lemon resting on papers that have parallel lines inscribed on them representing a musical score. The same is the case with the decanter of wine just above the lemon and also with the orange and glass of wine to the far right.

On the back side of the table both the left and right sides are two images. The one on the left is a red figure with a kidney bean shape that I perceive to be the musician. Complimenting this figure on the right back side of the table is a triangular figure in yellow with zig-zags and dots on it. I perceive this to be a female companion enjoying the food and music of her friend.

Still Life With Fruits and Stringed Instrument by Georges Braque

The back wall of the scene is complex and busy, you can see the base-board of the wall and floor running along the bottom of the figure in red and then continue on from the other side of the table to the right of the triangular figure then off the canvas. There is no attention paid to keeping the horizon line of the floor in alignment with each side, the point is to secure the back plane for the table.

Throughout the painting you have zig-zag patterns that permeate the entire fabric of the work and give great visual stimulation to the piece. All of the zig-zag patterns are compartmentalized as you can see from the three panels on the back wall, the triangle figure to the right and the bowl of fruit impaled by dorsal fin like patterns. This is a wonderful stimulating work and is a landmark in bringing Cubist elements to the fore.

Wine Serving Steps For Restaurant Servers

Why Learn To Serve Wine Properly?

If you have ever bought a bottle of wine in a nice restaurant, you may have noticed that the server does not just pop the cork and pour you a glass, but instead goes through a specific process of opening the bottle, letting the buyer test the wine, then pouring in a specific manner.

This presentation may seem unnecessary, but like many formalities it is based on tradition, and serving wine in the proper manner shows that the restaurant knows what they are doing. Most restaurants want to give their guests the impression that they are very important customers, especially when they are going to pay top dollar for a bottle of wine!

Wine Serving Steps For Restaurant Servers

This formal wine presentation adds to the atmosphere of exclusivity of the restaurant, and makes the guest feel important. When you are serving the wine, it shows that you are professional and know your business well.

7 Steps to Serving Wine in a Restaurant

Step 1: Set up wine glasses ahead of time. Make sure there is a glass for everyone who will be drinking wine. Make sure you have the proper glasses for the wine (red, white, or sparkling wines require different glasses). If you are not sure about the glass, go to my website and see my wine glass types page for a guide on which glass should be used with which wine (this is important!).

Step 2: Bring the wine up to the table. Present it to the person who ordered it with the label facing them. Announce the wine to them. For example, say "the 2003 Chateau Latour Pauillac, sir". This is just so the person can verify that you brought them the correct bottle.

Step 3: Hold the bottle in one hand and use your wine key to remove the cork. Try to take out the cork without it making a pop. If it is champagne or sparkling wine, definitely do not pop the cork and shoot it across the room (even though it is fun)!

Step 4: Present the cork to the person who ordered the wine. Some people want to inspect it or sniff it to make sure it has not dried out.

Step 5: Pour a small amount into the glass of the head of the table (the person that ordered the bottle). Let him or her test it out to make sure it is OK.

Step 6: Fill up the glasses of the other guests, ladies first, in a clockwise order. Fill the host's glass last. Only fill the glasses about half full.

Step 7: If there is any wine left in the bottle, leave it on the edge of the table (if it is a red wine) or in a chiller (if it is a white wine). The guests will then refill their own glasses as necessary.

These are the basic 7 steps for serving wine for a server or sommelier. There are other things to consider, including the serving temperature of the wine and whether or not you should aerate it or use a decanter. For more information on these subjects, go to my website.

Types of Glass

We are surrounded by lots of types of glasses everywhere. Here I want to give you some information about the glass and their different types.

Float Glass is a term for perfectly flat, clear glass. The production method, introduced in the UK by Sir Alastair, Pilkington in the late 1950's is still being used today and 90% of flat glass is manufactured using this process.

Body-tinted is a normal float-clear glass into whose melt colorants are added for tinting and solar-radiation absorption properties. This reduces heat penetration in buildings. Coloured glass is an important architectural element for the exterior appearance of shades. It is also used in interior decoration (doors, partitions, staircase panels, mirrors).

Types of Glass

Reflective Glass is an ordinary float glass with a metallic coating to reduce solar heat. This special coating also produces a mirror effect, preventing subject from seeing through the glass. It is mainly used in facades.

Low-E Glass is a low-emission clear glass with a microscopically thin coating of metal oxide. This allows the sun's heat and light to pass through into the building, but at the same time blocks heat from leaving the room, thereby reducing heat loss considerably.

Mirrors are commonly made of glass with a smooth, polished surface.

Insulating Glass is a multi-glass combination consisting of two or more glass panes. Its' most important function is to reduce thermal losses, transparency by reducing incidence of condensation on the warm air side, and the possibility of using larger glazed areas without increasing energy consumption.

Enamelled/Screen Printed is a decorative glass, is tempered or heat-strengthened, one face of which is covered, either partially or totally, with mineral pigments. It is also a solar ray controller, and is used for glazing and for cladding in facades and roofs. It can be assembled into laminated glass or gazed insulation.

Patterned is an imperfectly smooth structure with different patterns impressed on it. The depth, size and shape of the patterns determine the magnitude and direction of reflection. Patterned glass usually transmits only slightly less light than clear glass. It can be used for interior design and decorations, furniture, windows etc.

Photovoltaic is a special glass with integrated solar cells, to convert solar energy into electricity. This means that the power for an entire building can be produced within the roof.

Electro-chromic is an energy-saving component for building that can change colour on command. It works by passing low-voltage electrical charges across a very thin coating on the glass surface, activating an electro-chromic layer which changes colour from clear to dark.

Liquid crystal glazing is laminated glass with a minimum of two clear or coloured sheets of glass and a liquid crystal film, assembled between at least two plastic layers. In the off state, the liquid crystals are not aligned, which prevent vision, yet allows light to pass through the glass. When it is switched on, the liquid crystals align, turning the glass transparent and allowing vision through the glass. The change of transparency takes place within milliseconds. Liquid crystal glazing is designed for internal applications, including partitions, display cases, bank screens etc.

Self-cleaning is an ordinary float glass with a special photo-catalytic coating. It is made by chemically bonding and integrating a microscopically thin surface layer to the exterior surface of clear glass. This type of glass also has Hydrophilic-properties, meaning that rain flows down as a sheet, washing away the dirt instead of leaving it behind as with normal glass.

Tempered (Toughened) is two or more times stronger than annealed glass. When broken, it is shatters into many small fragments, which prevent major injuries.

Fire-resistant Glass can be classified in two categories, (1) heat transmitting glass that contains flames and inflammable gas for short period of time, but does not prevent the transmission of heat to the other side of glazing, e.g. wired glass, reinforced laminated glass. (2) Fire-insulating glass contains the flames and inflammable gas for longer period and prevents not only the transmission of flames and smoke but also of heat to the other side.

Quck Simple Way to Aerate your Wine with a Frother

Quck Simple Way to Aerate your Wine with a Frother Tube. Duration : 1.08 Mins.

The best way to enjoy a glass of wine is to give it some time to breathe. Unfortunately must of us want to enjoy the wine as soon as we open the bottle (nothing wrong with that!). To solve this problem you can use a Decanter or an Aerator, however these can be very expensive and cumbersome. A very simple and affordable way to solve this problem is to use a Frother to aerate your wine.
